Fortuna Sittard - Sunderland
score: 3-2 (16' min Kool 1-0, 39' min Chris Makin 1-1, 57' min Danny Dichio 1-2, 69' min Gerritsen 2-2, 89' min Gerritsen 3-2)
Another one-day trip on the agenda. This time Nick and Drew got company from Nick's brother-in-law Wieb. The three of us got in the car to Sittard. This is alomst the most south spot of the Netherlands. This match was in the Fortuna Stadium and we arrived in time and got in the away-end. This time even more Sunderland supporters got across. But this wasn't the first friendly and some of the players had to rest. Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips weren't involved.
The match started a bit soft by the Lads. It was Ruud Kool who found the gap in the wall and scored from a direct free kick. After that Sunderland woke up. And some great play by Kevin Kilbane allowed Chris Makin to score from the rebound. Well that is one to put on our cv. How many Sunderland fans can say: "I was there when Chris Makin scored". The Lads had also a French striker on trial. It was Cedric Barton from League 1 side Rennes. He had one game only to proof his quality. He wasn't that bad, but I doubt if he can be a good addition to the squad. Dichio did show it and he scored the 2-1 with a header. It looked like this would be the first win in this pre-season tour, until just two Fortuna breaks. It was Dennis Gerritsen who scored twice. In the injury time it was Paul Butler who headed against the bar, but the game finished 3-2. Sunderland was the better team, but to concede three goals is too much.
After the game we got in the supporters-home. This was more of a garden-shed. We had a conversation with the Fortuna supporters who were amazed with the away support. Even teams from the Dutch league don't bring that many away support. After that we got in the car again, back home. There's some more Dutch friendlies coming, so we'll wait for the next match.
